The present article is seeking to explore the internal roots of the failure to establish an independent Kurdistan in Iraq, with an emphasis on cultural and social factors. According to Bourdieu's theory of practice, cultural and social factors constitute the foundation for forming an independent society, while other factors, including economic, political, and international factors, are considered secondary. Based on this perspective, the main question of the article is: “What are the internal (cultural-social) factors contributing to the failure of the plan to establish an independent Kurdistan in Iraq?” The authors’ analysis focuses on three key dimensions: linguistic and dialectal structures, religious and sectarian structures and social relations and tribal structures. Each of these aspects is examined through the analytical framework of Bourdieu. The study reveals that divergent and sometimes conflicting linguistic and dialectal structures, an incoherent religious and sectarian system and political sectarianism alongside fragmented social structures have significantly contributed to the failure of Iraqi Kurdistan's bid for independence (hypothesis). Consequently, the Kurdistan Region of Iraq currently lacks the social capital necessary for forming an independent state. The research employs library-based data to address its main inquiry.
