Art carries an inherently critical and protest-oriented function—except in cases where it is suppressed under authoritarian regimes. Political protests offer artists the opportunity to express dissent in the most visible and impactful ways. The Arab Spring created a moment in which art across the Middle East was able to voice strong objections to the prevailing status quo.
The central question of this study is to understand the role of art in the protest movements known as the Arab Spring. Specifically, it asks: What are the differences between resistance art before the Arab Spring and protest art that emerged after it?
This research adopts a descriptive-analytical method based on documentary and library sources. The analysis is framed within the conceptual frameworks of image politics and visual culture.
Findings indicate that prior to the Arab Spring, resistance art was hidden, confined to private spaces, often critical of ideological and traditional symbols, and expressed through individual narratives. After the Arab Spring, however, protest art shifted its focus from depictions of dictators to images of ordinary citizens, expanded into urban and digital public spaces, became more visible, and evolved into a complex, multifaceted medium that transcends binary narratives
