Performative States and Post-Authoritarian Politics: An Aesthetic Analysis of Power in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar

English

In recent decades, the rise of visual media and transformations in communicative technologies have shifted politics in many non-liberal states—particularly in the Arab Gulf monarchies—from the realm of rational decision-making to a domain governed by spectacle, ritual, and aesthetic staging. This article focuses on Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar to demonstrate that political agency in these states is not confined to formal institutions but is also reproduced through the public appearances of leaders, ceremonial practices, urban architecture, and media-driven image production. Drawing upon theoretical frameworks of politics-as-performance, theatricality of power, and aesthetic governance, the analysis elucidates how political authority is consolidated through symbolic forms and sensory experiences. The findings suggest that these states deploy tools such as royal ceremonies, global mega-events, international expos, and visual branding of leadership to construct a post-authoritarian order in which legitimacy is derived through spectacle and performance. The article argues that in the media-saturated era, politics cannot be fully understood without analyzing form, the body, and ritualized practices.
